Montmartre

Paris: Day 5

Another wonderful day! Aaron and I took Velib bikes up to the northern part of Paris to a district called Montmartre. We parked our bikes and hiked up the hill.

We followed Rick Steves’ walking tour and saw some amazing sights. Montmartre is known as the Artist district, famous painters like Picaso, Renoir, and Van Goh lived up here.

The Moulin de la Galette. This is the backdrop for Renoir’s Bal du Moulin de la Galette

Van Goh lived on the top floor of this building from 1886 to 1888

This is a statue of St. Denis who was sentenced to death for spreading Christianity. A Roman soldier beheaded him, but St. Denis popped right up, picked up his head, and kept walking.

I have no idea what this is, but it reminded me of The Awakening in DC

One of my favorite movies of all times! I wish we could have gone in for a show, but its pricey and some of the girls are little naked… so maybe next time.

We then rode our bikes down to the center of Paris.

When you step on this you are destine to return to Paris.  We made sure to walk all over it!

Another statue of St. Denis holding his head.

We walked up to the top of Notre Dame.

Then we went down to the Holocaust Memorial.

Over 200,000 Parisians were shipped off to concentration camps from this point.

    hello, great picts and blog!
I was a little surprised by the 200k parisians deported and looked it up:
76 000 jews were deported in all from France (plus 3000 dying in France). Of those 24000 were French (the Poles at 26000 having the biggest number), and only about 3% came back.
All in all, about 25 % of the French jewish population 'disappeared' during WW2 (to becompared to the 50 to 90% of other invaded countries with big jewish populations). Although Vichy government, and a portion of the French population, were very antisemitic, large swathes were not which quickly hampered Vichy / SS work, especially (sadly) when they were French citizens.

On a lighter side, the picture of the man going through the wall is in reference to a 1943 short story by Marcel Ayme.

Its about a man, living in Montmartre (like the author), who has the quaint ability to walk through walls.

    I LOVE Montmartre! Beautiful!

I made someone mad, though, when I said I thought Sacre Coeur was prettier than Notre Dame.

I love your Moulin Rouge pic. Remind me to show you mine.
